The Science Behind Sleep and Ways to Get More of It

From the Editors

In this anxiety provoking time, many readers have expressed problems with sleep disturbances. A book entitled Why We Sleep: Unlocking the Power of Sleep and Dreams by Matthew Walker, PhD. (professor of neuroscience and psychology at UC Berkeley and Director of the Center for Human Sleep Science) offers the reader information on many aspects of sleep and dreams as well as the value of sleep for our physical and mental health. He also provides the science behind his explanations.

In addition, the author refers readers who “are not suffering from insomnia or another sleep disorder” to a list of what he calls “good ‘sleep hygiene’ practices” found in both the appendix of his book and on a page of healthy sleep tips in the National Institutes of Health publication, Medline Plus.
